I am currently going to through the graduate job application, and I have been finding it interesting that employers check candidates on social networking sites. One job application actually asked me to answer the same question..... should potential employers look at candidates' Facebook pages?
Facebook is a good way of making sure there are
no red flags with potential candidates; these include drinking, drug use and
bad mouthing former employers. One’s Facebook page can be a reflection on the
person’s character and attitude. I also believe that if an employer dose not
like a person on Facebook, they probably won’t like working with them. Facebook
is a good way for employers to research about the potential candidates just
like how candidates can research about potential employers.
The entire focus of a job interview and resume
is to get to know the candidate and decide if they are the best fit for the job
at hand. In my opinion if the employer has the chance to get to know the person
on a new level then it is perfectly acceptable. Overall, seeing the job seeker’s social media profile would accomplish
the goal of the interview in the first place because they are getting to know
the applicant beyond the cover letter and resume.
It is the responsibility of the employer to hire the best
person for the job, and in that sense, using social media to get to know the
applicant seems like a thorough way to get the job done. By using the
information they gather, the employer would be able to determine if this person
is best for not only the job, but the company as a whole. By placing the right
person with the job, the company will benefit in the long run.
That is just my view on the situation!
